Thinning to meet sawlog objectives at shorter rotation in lodgepole pine stands

چکیده

We modelled how pre-commercial and commercial thinning affects development of merchantable timber, specifically large sawlogs (>20 cm diameter), on various site qualities at different harvest ages. Data from juvenile permanent sample plots post-harvest regenerated lodgepole pine stands in Alberta were projected using the Mixedwood Growth Model (MGM 21). Pre-commercial (PCT) levels (CT) with PCT assessed good, medium, fair quality. Results show quality alone had greatest impact yields good sites producing ?1.5 times yield medium ?4.3 that sites. Moderate produced a greater quantity diameter) their associated volume over unthinned than or sites, though positively influenced total these as well. On age 50, CT treatments about ?50 m 3 /ha more cm) control; such gain drops to 18 In addition, mean annual increment culminated earlier also enabling harvest.

Stem sapwood permeability in relation to crown dominance and site quality in self-thinning fire-origin lodgepole pine stands.

Stem sapwood hydraulic permeability, tree leaf area, sapwood basal area, earlywood to latewood ratio of annual rings, radial variation in hydraulic permeability and stem hydraulic capacity were examined in dominant (D), codominant (CD) and suppressed (SP) lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud.) trees growing on medium and poor sites. Hydraulic permeability on a sapwood area basis (ks) w...

Snow accumulation in thinned lodgepole pine stands, Montana, USA

Alternative silvicultural treatments such as thinning can be used to restore forested watersheds and reduce wildfire hazards, but the hydrologic effects of these treatments are not well defined. We evaluated the effect of two shelterwood-with-reserve silvicultural prescriptions, one leaving residual trees evenly distributed (SE) and the second leaving residual trees in groups (SG), both with 50...

Optimal Stochastic Pine Stands Harvest Rotation Policies

A new Faustmann optimal rotation harvesting stands’ problem under Brown geometric price and Logistic and Gompertz wood stock, diffusions is presented. The optimal cut policies for the stochastic Faustmann model and the single harvest rotation or Vicksell model are evaluated in the case of a Chilean Radiata pine forest company. The company cut policy validates the Vicksell model, its optimal cut...

Thinning Response and Growth Trends of Seeded Scots Pine Stands at the Arctic Timberline

Growth patterns and reactions of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) to thinning in extremely harsh climatic conditions were studied in two seeded Scots pine stands located on the arctic timberline. Coniferous trees usually do not form closed stands at the timberline, but occur only in scattered tree groups. The trial was established in two stands in 1985–1986 when the trees were at an age of 47 a...
